Educational characteristics that instills basic values and ethics in soul is called 'Value Based Education'. The subject that enables us to understand what is valuable for human satisfaction is called Value Education. Value Education is important to help everyone in improving the human value system.

Once one has understood values in life it enables one to examine and control various decision one makes in life. Value Education enables us to understand our needs and help visualizing our goals correctly and also aid to improve our confusions and contradictions which empowers us to rightly utilize the technological innovations.Values are the foundation for the basis of our thoughts, behavior and action.

Once we know what is valuable to us, these values become the basis, the anchor for our actions. We also need to understand the universalities of various human values, because only then we can have a definite and common program for value education. Then only we can be assured of a happy and harmonious human society.

Science & Technology have advanced to a very high degree and considered to be the most powerful tools for happiness and prosperity. However, the use of science and technology can only contribute to human welfare provided it is also associated with a matching advancement in the human values and wisdom. Value based education isn't a new concept, as we find it mentioned in Vedas, holy books and the Upanishads.

The need for value based education has been highlighted by various commissions and expert committees on Education. Great leaders of modern era like Mahatama Gandhi and Swami Vivekanand too have advocated value based education.
